The Truth About Aging

Do wrinkles, as some would say, add a loveliness of character? I choose to believe that is true. And hopefully it is also true what they say about grey hair and wisdom, because those wily, wiry things are multiplying, and they seem quite determined to become my crown.

Am I a bit slower in body and in brain? Yep – that is definitely true.

And it is truthfully logical to assume that there are more years on this planet behind me, than ahead of me.

It is also true, about aging, that faith, hope and love do not require youth in order to do their best work; that tiny seeds will still grow giant trees whether they are planted by young hands or old; and that miracles still happen.

Another year has come and gone … and I’m still here. That is true.

It is true that the past 365 days have not been easy for me, or indeed for our entire planet. Looking back, it is true that there were some deep rocky valleys along the way that took some dear ones from me; from us, and surely those troubles added to my wrinkles and to the grey.

But it is also true that there was joy amidst the sorrow, beauty found in the ashes, and some victories.

I am still here. It is true that I am one of the lucky ones.

And so, be it luck or blessing or providence or all, on this first day, this new beginning, the start of my next trip around the sun, I declare this to be true:

No matter what may happen around me, no matter what others may do or say, with whatever time I have left on this planet, my wrinkling, graying, slower self will do my best to

·        still plant seeds of faith;

·        still hold on to hope and believe in dreams come true;

·        still keep on  dancing and walking and moving and yogaing;

·        still keep on singing, and writing and speaking things of empathy and love;

·        still choose compassion and inclusion over judgement and fear;

·        still work towards being the very best version of me;

·        still be a seeker of truth, and a follower of ‘the’ Truth. ·        still be accepting of the difficult "getting old" kind of truth, which holds within in it, as does all truth, a promise to, one way or another, be a liberating thing.

“The truth will set you free*.”  I’m counting on that.

Happy Birthday to Me 😊
